Have you ever had a "money test"? The rich young ruler in this story did. Jesus asked him to do something, He asked him to part with his possessions and give it to the poor; do you think he passed or failed this test? If you answered failed, you are correct. He failed his "money test".
I received a number of money test, some I passed, and some I failed. One I remember like it was just yesterday. One day, I received an unexpected check in the mail for $100, and I had already had it spent in my mind before I even took it to the bank to cash it. I was going to go get my hair done, and go get a mani and a pedi.
Later on that evening I was sitting on my sofa, still very excited about the fact that I received this unexpected check, and I heard the Holy Spirit say "you didn't ask me what I want you to do with the money". And I thought "come on Lord, it's only $100, what could you possibly want me to do with it?" And I heard Him say again "you didn't ask me what I want you to do with the money". So this time, I said "okay Lord, what do you want me to do with the money?" And He said " give it to Nancy" (that's not really her name, but names are not whats important right now). And I said "Nancy, why her, she doesn't need any money, she has it all together". And He said again "give it to Nancy".
So, all weekend, I'm trying to get another sign from God, I even called and asked a couple of people what they thought about it. You know how we do, God doesn't give you the answer you want, so you try to get it from somewhere else. Well, Sunday came, and I saw Nancy, and I knew I had to give her the money. And you know what God had a nerve to do? He had a nerve to remind me to make sure I paid tithes on that money too. Can you believe that? (smile) So anyway, I paid tithes on the $100 and went to write a check for $90, I mean that was the dollar amount after the tithes were paid. Well God had something else to say, he says "no, give her the whole $100". And I'm thinking "Lord, you sure are asking for a lot here". So, I gave Nancy the check for $100, and she was so thankful. And I felt good and bad, because I still wanted to get my hair done, and my mani and pedi.
Well, I let it go, and went on with the rest of my week. The following Sunday rolled around, and another sister in the church gives me a hug and says to me, "I left something for you in your book over on the chair". I said okay, thinking it was a card or something. So I grab my things, and got ready to go head out. And when I got to my car, I remembered there was something in my book, and I opened my book, and there was $300 cash sitting there waiting for me. I immediately grabbed my cell phone, and called her. And before I could talk, she says to me "God told me to bless you with that $300, and for you not to spend it on anything but yourself". Don't pay a bill, don't put it into savings, but spend it on you". I was speechless, I mean what could I say? Here I was complaining about giving someone $100 the Sunday before that, and God had it on His heart to give me more than what He asked of me. Which brings me to this scripture "And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or property, for my sake, will receive a hundred times as much in return and will inherit eternal life." (Matthew 19:29)
You see, the rich young ruler didn't sit around to hear that part. After he heard Jesus ask him to part with his possessions, he didn't wait around to hear anything else. Needless, to say, I was able to get my hair done, my mani, and pedi, AND buy myself a few outfits.
I'm not saying that God is going to test you, and ask you to give up everything, but if He did would you pass or fail??
